Optometrists provide vision care by administering eye examinations to determine whether vision correction is needed with the prescription of eyeglasses or contact lenses.
They dispense spectacle prescriptions, fit soft and rigid gas permeable contact lenses, assist in taking patient histories, assess vision, refract, and perform diagnostic and screening tests (which includes but is not limited to non-contact tonometry, topography, and visual field examination) all under the supervision of the ophthalmologist.
They are also trained to screen for and recognize eye disease and defects of the visual system, and to refer patients to the appropriate medical practitioners.
