UAE: Energy drinks will have to be approved and displayed on separate shelves.
From August 1, energy drinks will have to be displayed on separate shelves in retail shops throughout the country and approved by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) before going on the shelves.
Furthermore, they will have to be presented with a health warning sticker.
These decisions were taken in coordination with GCC countries by authorities in the country to make consumption of the product safer, by following the health warning guidelines, let ESMA know.
The measures target traders, importers, manufacturers and retailers in the UAE.
Traders, manufacturers and importers will have to apply for registration of their products through the Emirates Conformity Assessment Scheme (ECAS). When approved, they will receive a certificate of conformity from the ESMA.
Henceforth, retailers will only be able to deal with products that are certified and display an approved health warning sticker.
High levels of caffeine are usually dangerous for pregnant women, children under 16 and people who are sensitive to caffeine, clarified a spokesperson of the ESMA.
Violators of the new rules are subject to punishment of up to dh35,000 and prison, depending on the severity of the violation.
