Abu Dhabi's Mafraq Hospital to open specialist care centres

Abu Dhabi, UAE: Doctors specialising in neuro-science, spinal surgery and orthopedic and joint surgery will soon treat patients at three centres of excellence at an Abu Dhabi hospital.

Mafraq Hospital is set to establish the centres as part of a new initiative involving public hospitals in the emirate.

Up to 14 centres of excellence in specialist fields will be created as part of the plan, which will see “the concentration of talent and technology in key locations”, said Lee Huntley, Mafraq hospital’s chief executive officer.

“It’s concentrating the right kind of surgeons and the right kind of technology in certain places in the system so that they are easily accessible,” he said.

All three of Mafraq Hospital’s centres will be established within 18 months.

Mr Huntley said the hospital is committed to serving the Abu Dhabi and UAE community by developing long-term strategic plans that are well-aligned with the goals and expansion plans of the Executive Council and Abu Dhabi Plan 2030.

“We are working closely with SEHA (SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company that owns and operates public hospitals in Abu Dhabi) and the entire SEHA HealthSystem to implement a plan for service line integration that will make the best use of skills and resources of world-class physicians, and improve health care standards, both locally and internationally.”

SEHA is spending US$600 million on a new Mafraq Hospital campus to replace the existing site. The new hospital will have 739 beds, 364 more than are currently available.

“Our new campus is well underway and is expected to be open by 2015,” said Mr Huntley.

“It will serve as the community hospital for one of the fastest growing areas in the emirate and attract outstanding physicians and medical care teams from around the world.

“The opening of the new campus will also attract more Emiratis into the medical profession,” he added.

Mafraq Hospital’s executive team also announced its collaborative relationship with Al Rahba Hospital yesterday.

Dr Mohammed Yaman, chief medical officer at Mafraq Hospital, said: “We believe that the agreement to share service contracts, marketing expertise and physicians with Al Rahba will allow us to solidify and grow our regional market presence.”
