Dubai, UAE: Select Emirati students in Dubai have been promised a monthly allowance and a job if they continue their medical education and join the ranks after completing their studies.
The students will be given Dh6,500 per month to do a major in medicine and Dh5,000 per month if they want to continue studies in the field of paramedics and nursing.
Insurance and book expenses will also be covered along with all educational and registration fees.
The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) last month announced that it would sponsor 130 students under its ‘Sponsoring Emiratis in the Medical Sector Programme.”
It announced the approved list of requirements for students to be eligible.
The programme has been launched to overcome the Emiratisation challenges being faced by the medical sector after studies and reports found that there is a shortage of Emiratis in medical fields- especially in the nursing, medicine and paramedic sectors. Following graduation, the students will also have secured jobs at DHA hospitals and clinics.
“There is a need for experienced Emirati cadres in the medical sector in Dubai to support the growing developments, this vital sector is experiencing,” said Humaid Al Qatami, Chairman of the Board and Director General of DHA.
A DHA study found that among the challenges that contribute to the shortage of Emiratis working in the medical field is the length of the medical programmes, which can take up to seven years which is then followed by six to seven years of practical training.
Al Qatami said the programme does not only aim to attract Emiratis to enter the medical sector in fields they are needed most but also to excel in the field of medicine to better benefit the people of the UAE in the future.
“By launching this programme, we hope to not only elevate this sector further but also support the Emiratisation drive in Dubai,” he said.
The Emirati high school students will be chosen by a committee based on a criteria and students interested in applying can do so by visiting the authority’s website.
According to the DHA’s Annual Health Statistical Report for 2015, a total of 1,612 Emiratis are currently working in the medical sector in Dubai. Category-wise statistics says 276 physicians, 106 dentists, 50 nurses, 29 pharmacists are working in Dubai hospitals and primary health centres.
