Dubai, UAE: The International Conference on Biotechnology and Bioengineering- 2014 (ICBB 2014) was held at BITS Pilani- Dubai Campus in collaboration with the Microbiologist Society, India and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar University, Aurangabad on 29th and 30th October 2014.
Over 82 delegates from UAE, India, UK, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh presented their work at the conference. There were 12 invited talks, 50 oral presentations and 20 posters covering a wide spectrum of topics ranging from plant biotechnology, bioremediation, fermentation technology, bioprocess technology, metabolic engineering, biodiversity, bio-sensors, bio-fuels, genetic diseases, nanotechnology, microbiology and potential drug leads to intellectual property.
The inaugural function was graced by Honourable Consul General of India in U.A.E. Mr. Anurag Bhushan as the Guest of Honour and Dr. Ismahane, Director General, International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture, Dubai, UAE as the Chief Guest. At the inaugural ceremony, Director, Dr. R. N. Saha introduced BITS Pilani Dubai Campus and emphasized the need for research to be directed towards solving real-world problems. Dr. Neeru Sood, (Associate Dean, ARD) introduced the conference and the areas of research covered by presenters at the conference. Dr. A.M. Deshmukh (President, Microbiologist Society India) introduced his organization and welcomed the speakers. Hon. Consul General of India to Dubai, Mr. Anurag Bhushan, a chemical engineer himself, expressed his hope that developments in biotechnology and bioengineering will help sustain the growing world population in coming decades. Dr. Ismahane Elouafi (Deputy General, International Center for Biosaline Agriculture, UAE), the chief guest at the function, spoke about her expectation from the Indian scientific community to break the monopoly of large pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies over drug development and genetic research by providing cheaper, more accessible solutions on a smaller scale.
The ICBB 2014 was very successful as it brought together members of the scientific community for a comprehensive exchange of information and ideas through presentations and discussions. The current research scenario and future scopes in the fields of Biotechnology and Bioengineering were discussed and the possibility of exploiting them for social benefits was explored.
