First Emirati woman to become ASCP certified pathologist

Al Ain, UAE: Professional competency brought an international distinction for Hafsa Shebli, an Emirati pathologist, when she was certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) recently.

She is the first woman in the UAE and the GCC countries who secured the ASCP certification — the gold standard in clinical laboratory endorsement, said the administration of Tawam Hospital. Shebli works at the hospital’s laboratory.

Shebli, said the hospital is globally qualified to undertake the clinical examination of pap smears, a test to detect cervical cancer, and other examinations to identify cellular abnormalities and detect changes in body cells that can help in the early diagnosis of cancer.

She is a qualified Bachelor of Science degree holder in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the UAE University. She joined the Anatomic Pathology Section of the Tawam Laboratory Department in 2005. After working for six years, Shebli decided to pursue higher studies in Cytology in Melbourne, Australia. She returned to the UAE after completing her course mastery of new skills and techniques.

“Shebli shines as an example of our efforts towards developing UAE national talent,” said Humaid Al Mansouri, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Tawam Hospital. He said her enthusiasm, ability to learn quickly and eagerness to acquire new skills were noticed by supervisors who encouraged her to push for further studies. “She is an inspiration to our staff and more are expected to follow her example,” he added.

Tawam Labs, he said, boasts a high number of Emiratis working in the Abu Dhabi Health Services (SEHA) network in the UAE. “We look for talent among UAE nationals before we venture to hire from outside as we believe that they are committed to learning and development and to making a positive contribution to our operations and practice,” said Al Mansouri.
