Dr. Monique L. McCray

Dr. Monique L. McCray, MD, is a Staff Physician in the Emergency Medicine Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. McCray worked as a Staff Emergency Physician at Providence Hospital and Kaiser Permanente in Washington, DC.

Dr. McCray attended medical school at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. While there, she investigated the intersection of biological phenomena and culture. Dr. McCray then studied the impact of gradual skin color changes in African American newborns on their immediate and extended families. In 1996, she was awarded a fellowship from Reader’s Digest and a fellowship from the American Medical Association to investigate the diagnosis, education and treatment of HIV/AIDS by traditional healers in rural South Africa as compared to non-hospital based clinics in rural Colorado.

Following medical school, Dr. McCray undertook her internship in Internal Medicine at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. She was selected as the second ever African American female to become a Naval Flight Surgeon. She spent three years as the Clinical Medical Director at the flight wing of the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. During this time, she directed a team that assured the safety and health of the naval flight personnel and she flew reconnaissance missions while assisting in the investigations of flight mishaps.

In 2002, Dr. McCray returned to residency training in emergency medicine and completed her training at Newark Beth Israel Hospital.
