Dr. Pier Carlo Bergonzi, MD, is a Staff Physician in the Critical Care Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Bergonzi was a Senior Staff Physician at San Raffaele Hospital and Scientific Institute and also served as an Intensivist Expert Consultant for Fondazione Salvatore Maugeri in Milan, Italy.
Dr. Bergonzi began his career at San Raffaele Hospital and Scientific Institute in 2006 as a Staff Anesthesiologist and Intensivist in the Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. He worked as an anesthesiologist in the emergency and general surgery operating rooms as well as in the Acute Pain Service for the treatment of post-operative pain. As part of this role, Dr. Bergonzi also worked as Intensivist in the General Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and primarily handled trauma, respiratory and post-operative cases. In addition, Dr. Bergonzi was as a member of the MET (Medical Emergency Team) at the hospital, treating patients with medical, surgical or traumatic emergencies both in the wards and in the emergency department.
Recently, Dr. Bergonzi served as a Medical Director in a leading Italian non-profit organization, where he was involved in national and international emergency medical transport (including Flying Team and Medevac Service), special health services, extra-hospital management of critically ill patients, medical escorts and mass events.
During a project of international cooperation, he led the on-site startup and education phase for the newborn Intensive Care Unit of the Hue College of Medicine and Pharmacy, a training, research and reference center for the care of highly infectious respiratory diseases in Central Vietnam.
During his career he has advanced in topics such as central venous catheter placement under ultrasound guidance (becoming a Winfocus instructor in the field), disaster medicine (he is instructor of MRMI – Medical Response to Major Incidents international course), sepsis, mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal support for severe respiratory failure.
He has published articles, abstracts and letters on anesthesia and intensive care topics in leading medical journals including The Journal of the American Medical Association, Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine, European Journal of Anesthesiology and Anesthesia & Analgesia. In addition, he co-authored two book
apters on intensive care monitoring and scientific research methodology in medical textbooks.
Dr. Bergonzi earned his undergraduate degree from the San Raffaele University Hospital in Milan, Italy. He also received his medical degree and completed his residency in Anesthesia and Intensive Care at San Raffaele University.
