The Gulf International Cancer Center in Abu Dhabi introduces the first PET/CT scanner in UAE. It detects cancerous tumors in the body and its spread using radioactive glucose. This enables the physician in deciding whether the patient will need surgery or radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
The radioactive glucose (18-FDG) is made available by a committed Cyclotron, present at the center.
The glucose is prepared a short time before being administered to the patient. The PET/CT scanning is done as an out-patient procedure over a period of one and half hours. It is indicated for patients with breast and lung cancer, head and neck cancer, thyroid and esophageal cancer, colon cancer, ovarian and cervical cancer as well as lymphoma and skin melanoma.
The Gulf International Cancer Center managed also to fuse the produced images of the PET/CT into the radiation therapy treatment planning used at the center. This allowed more accuracy in delineating the tumor area. Patients will benefit from the fusion since the radiation oncologist will be able to deliver higher radiation doses to kill the tumor and meanwhile less side effects by avoiding more normal tissue. This capability is the first in the MENA region, and available only in few International centers.
More than 2000 patients were scanned at the Gulf International Cancer Center in Abu Dhabi utilizing the first PET/CT scanner in the UAE. The 18-FDG was produced by a supporting Cyclotron. Patients diagnosed with malignant lymphoma, breast cancer, malignant melanoma and colon cancer were the majority presenting for scanning.
The PET/CT scans were able to determine cancer spread; validate or detect lesions not observed by other radiological procedures. Staging and management were changed based on PET/CT findings. Evaluation of response to chemotherapy was achieved through comparisons of the images of the scans. Discontinuation or changing of chemotherapy protocols were tailored to the results of the PET/CT scans
We were also able to link fused images of the scans with the radiation therapy treatment planning system at the center. This allowed a more accurate delineation of the tumor volume based on metabolic activity. PET/CT scanning proved to be an added, important tool for more accurate staging and assessing how the cancer spread and response to treatment for both medical oncology and radiation therapy.
