Pediatric endocrinology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that manages diseases related to hormonal regulation during infancy, childhood and adolescence.  The service of Pediatric Endocrinology service at AL Zahra Hospital is to be run by Dr. Mohamed Wasfy El Abiary; Consultant Pediatric Endocrinologist (Pediatric Endocrinology HAAD License No. GD11884).  Dr. Abiary received his training in Ain Shams University hospitals in Cairo for 5 years. Following this he moved to UK where he received further training in neonatal, general and Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of Glasgow. He held different positions in UK and practiced as a consultant pediatrician in charge of Diabetes and Endocrinology division in Edinburgh and East Sussex for almost 9 years. He moved to Abu Dhabi in 2003, held different positions as head of Pediatric Department Zayed military Hospital, Consultant at SKMC, Head of Pediatrics Burjeel hospital, before Joining Kids Heart Medical Centre at the beginning of 2017

Scope of Service

Diagnosis and management of the following disease entities:

• Growth problems, such as short and tall stature
• Follow up of children born small for Gestational age
• Follow up nd management of syndromes associated with growth or hormonal problems (e.g. Turner syndrome, Prader Willi Syndrome, Noonan Syndrome etc)
• Disorders of puberty (Early delayed, or abnormal forms of  puberty)
• Enlarged thyroid gland (goiter)
• Underactive or overactive thyroid gland
• Pituitary gland hypo/hyper function
• Adrenal gland hypo/hyper function
• Ambiguous genitals/intersex
• All forms of Diabetes Mellitus including type1, type 2, rare forms of diabetes (disease related, iatrogenic, MODY and neonatal diabetes)
• Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
• Obesity including rare pathological causes
• Problems with vitamin D (rickets, hypocalcemia)
• Carrying out and interpreting dynamic hormonal investigations for the diagnosis and management of hormonal disorders
