Dr. Girish Chandra Varma

Dr Girish Chandra Varma completed his MS in General Surgery from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, India and his MCh in Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery from Bombay University, India. He then obtained his clinical fellowship in Cardiovascular Surgery from the University of Alabama Birmingham, USA in 1996 and postgraduate diploma in Cardiovascular Surgery from University Pierre & Marie Curie, Paris in 1999. He has an excellent and impressive track record of 28 years, performing a variety of open heart, thoracic and vascular procedures.

Dr Varma’s has worked as Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon in numerous hospitals of international repute. His speciality is in Cardiac Sciences, Chest Pain Clinic and Open-heart Surgery. Furthermore, he has vast experience in Cardiothoracic surgeries, ranging from all kinds of Valve surgeries, Septal Defects, Maze and Ross operations, along with Minimally Invasive Cardiac procedures for both Valve and CABG surgeries. His particular area of interest is in Beating Heart (off-pump) Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery.

He has performed over 7,500 Coronary Artery Bypass surgeries independently and assisted over 4,500 such cases. He has also performed over 100 Redo-open Heart surgeries. In addition, he has extensive experience in harvesting skelitonised LIMA, RIMA, Radial Artery and Saphenous Vein and Redo-sternotomy, Thoracotomy, Haemostasis and closure of chest at regular intervals.

Dr Varma has performed UAE’s first Total Arterial Coronary Revascularization – Triple Bypass Surgery using LIMA – Radial ‘Y’, Composite Conduit Procedure and he is the first surgeon to perform Awake Coronary Bypass Surgery on Beating Heart in UAE. He is also the first Cardiac Surgeon to perform an Awake Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery in the Middle East and the first Cardiac Surgeon to perform an Awake Mitral Valve Replacement in UAE.

Dr Varma has several international publications, articles and scientific presentations to his credit. He is a life member of the Indian Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons and member of several international cardiovascular societies.
